Instructional Unit: Goal 4

Objective 4: Given the information, the athlete will be able to explain the process of rehydrating.

Objective 3: Key Terms

  • Fluid Replacement - replenishing body fluids after exercise or fluid loss

  • Electrolytes - ions in the body with a charge that help balance the amount of water in your body cells

The Process of Rehydration

  • For competitive athletes monitoring their body fluid loss during exercise and replacing 100-150% of that fluid lost is crucial to rehydrating one’s body.

  • Adding in electrolytes to one’s diet - particularly after high intensity or long exercise - are important for fluid retention in the body.

  • After replacing the body’s fluid and electrolyte levels, it will naturally return to normal bodily functions including cardiac output, sweating mechanisms, etc.
